City of Walnut Creek “Rebound” Program Update

City Offers Outdoor Dining and Retail Applications

Post Date:06/09/2020 11:11 AM

Let’s get outside and dine, shop and be together again, with social distancing of course!

The City of Walnut Creek is opening applications for downtown businesses to use City parking spaces for free in front of their operations to expand dining and retail options. There are no fees, but a permit, safety inspection, and certificate of insurance are required. For alcohol service, an ABC permit and additional insurance are needed.

“We know that the success of our partners in the business community requires them to be creative,” said Mayor Loella Haskew.  “While government agencies aren’t often credited with creativity, the extraordinary times we are in now demand that we take new approaches to help our businesses survive and thrive.”

This effort is part of the City’s Rebound Program, which was quickly created to ensure that Walnut Creek businesses have a partner in their City government to fast-track good ideas to help the local economy bounce back and minimize red tape.  Find the forms and guidelines on the City’s website at www.walnut-creek.org/rebound.  If you aren’t sure how this might work in your unique space, please contact Collette Hanna at hanna@walnut-creek.org or 925-943-5899 x2145.

Showing the spirit of #walnutcreektogether, the Walnut Creek Downtown organization has partnered with Walnut Creek Ace Hardware and Evntwrks to help businesses build out their “pop-up” space as affordably as possible.  For details, please visit walnutcreekdowntown.com.

Several street closures are proposed, and the City is working with adjacent property owners to create workarounds for deliveries and pickups.  These closed streets will be programmed with public art and live music in the coming weeks.

If your business is outside Downtown, the City is willing to work with your property owner to make creative changes to accommodate more outdoor dining or expanded business space. Have your property owner contact Collette Hanna to discuss.

In the near future, the City will be launching guidelines for temporary signage and a streamlined permit process for temporary walk-up windows.  Visit the City’s website at www.walnut-creek.org to subscribe to updates as part of the Rebound program.  In the upper right corner of the page, select eNotifications, and register for news updates.
