Ygnacio Valley Road sidewalk widening under way
Stimulus funding logoThe City of Walnut Creek has received Federal funding to widen the sidewalk on the north side of Ygnacio Valley Road between Ygnacio Court and Marchbanks Drive (west).
The project is under way and is expected to be completed by December. Work will be done Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with traffic lane closures limited to 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The sidewalk on the north side of Ygnacio Valley Road will be closed during construction.  Pedestrians and bicyclists will be directed to an alternate route until the construction is completed.

Commission applications now being accepted
Applications are being accepted to fill vacancies on the Design Review, Planning and Transportation commissions. Applicants for the Planning and Transportation Commissions must be residents of the City of Walnut Creek and registered voters. A registered architect is preferred for the Design Review Commission vacancy; the applicant need not be a resident and registered voter in Walnut Creek.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. Additional information and an application is available on our website.

Safe needle disposal program offered through Waste Management
The Contra Costa County Solid Waste Authority, in conjunction with Valley Waste Management, has launched a program for residents to be able to safely dispose of needles, lancets and other sharps from their home. Residents should call Waste Management customer service at 925-935-8900 to purchase a special container for sharps disposal. The container will be delivered to the resident's home the following week. Community Emergency Response Team training offered
CERT logoRegistration is under way for the fall Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. CERT students learn how to work together safely in the event of a disaster for the benefit of their neighborhood and the greater community. At completion of the training, CERT graduates are sworn in as Volunteer Disaster Service Workers for the City of Walnut Creek. Classes will be Thursday evenings, Sept. 2 - Oct. 7, plus a morning drill on Saturday, Oct. 16. Cost is $20. Email cert@walnut-creek.org to register. More information is available on our website.

"Unbound" at the Bedford Gallery: A fresh look at books
Carmen Barer, artistJust in time for the grand opening of the new Library, the Bedford Gallery launches "Unbound: A National Exhibition of Book Art." This unique exhibition runs July 11 - Sept. 19, and features one-of-a-kind art books as well as two- and three-dimensional works created out of book pages, covers and spines. Among the featured artists is the late Andy Warhol, and the work at left by Carmen Barer. An opening reception will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 15.

Signature artwork installed at new Walnut Creek Library

The signature piece of public art for the new Walnut Creek Library – artist Christian Moeller’s Portrait in 12 Volumes of Gray --- is in place and ready to enchant the community at the July 17 Grand Opening. It took 9 hours on June 8 to install the 3,960 sketchbooks that compose the striking piece. Click for a minute-long timelapse video of the installation.

Public art walking tour on Saturday, May 8

Public art in City HallThe Bedford Gallery's "Second Saturday Walking Tours" of public art are back! The May 8 tour begins at 11 a.m. and will cover the area around the Walnut Creek BART station and includes Fletcher Benton’s “Folded Square Alphabet G” from his letter series. Meet at 11 a.m. in front of the Lesher Center for the Arts. Cost is $5 and includes a free pass to the Bedford Gallery. Tours last 45 minutes. Reservations are requested. Call 925-295-1417.

Opening on Boundary Oak Golf Course advisory committee
The Boundary Oak Golf Course Advisory Committee is seeking a "member at large"  to serve through June 2012. The member must live in Walnut Creek, and may not be a member of any home club.

The seven-member Golf Course Advisory Committee is an advisory body to the City's Park, Recreation and Open Space Commission, and serves as a forum for communication between various golf constituencies at the Boundary Oak Golf Course, the contract operator and City staff. The Committee meets at 4:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month.

Ygnacio Valley Road lane closures
Roadwork on Ygnacio Valley Road and La Casa Via in preparation for the opening of John Muir Health's five-story hospital tower is expected to continue through November. Faster, greener parking at City garages
Parking tokenThe City's three parking garages are getting new pay systems that  save time, money and even the environment. Customers can choose to pay by credit card, or take a reusable plastic parking token that tracks how long they've parked and can be updated with validations from participating businesses. The new system is expected to save more than $1 million over the next 10 years, eliminates wasteful paper parking slips, and will allow garages to operate 24/7. Installation will take place over several months; the Broadway garage has the new pay system in place as of Monday, March 8. To view a demonstration of the new system click here.

Open space purchase to be considered March 16
Open Space near Acalanes RidgeThe City Council on March 15 will consider participating in the purchase of 22.6 acres of open space located east of Acalanes High School in Lafayette. The property is adjacent to Walnut Creek’s 170-acre Acalanes Open Space and East Bay Regional Park District’s Briones-to-Mt. Diablo Regional Trail. The total purchase price is $1.3 million; monies raised through passage of the 2008 Measure WW park district bond would provide 90 percent of the funding, with the rest to be raised by the Muir Heritage Land Trust.

City opens Cooling Centers for folks needing to escape heat
Tice Valley GymThe City has two Cooling Centers where folks can come to escape the heat: Tice Valley Gym, 2005 Tice Valley Blvd. and Civic Park Community Center, 1375 Civic Drive. Both facilities have areas to sit, chat or read. On weekdays both facilities are open until 10 p.m. This weekend, Tice Gym will be open until 10 p.m.; Civic Park Community Center will close at 5 p.m.

City to honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day
Memorial Day ceremonyAt the City's Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 25, Mayor Gary Skrel will honor the memory of two Walnut Creek soldiers who gave their lives in 2007 while deployed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lt. Gov. John Garamendi is a scheduled speaker, as is Mike Conklin of the Sentinels of Freedom. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Civic Park gazebo.

Civic Pride Grant applications for 2009 now available
City of Walnut Creek logoEach year since 1989, the City of Walnut Creek has awarded Civic Pride Grants for projects that improve the quality of life in Walnut Creek. Proposals may relate to any of a variety of areas, including housing, education, recreation, and cultural arts. Total funds available for 2009-10 will be $50,000.  The deadline for applying for a Civic Pride Grant is April 24.  Application/information...



Dispose it safely here
Individuals may now safely dispose of their unwanted or outdated medications at a new Pharmaceutical Disposal Collection Box in the lobby of City Hall, 1666 North Main St. on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Medications may be bagged (pills can be placed in a sealed baggie). Liquid containers should be sealed in a plastic bag to prevent spills. Items NOT accepted include needles, lancets, pen needles or any other "sharps," aerosol cans, bloody or infectious wastes, hydrogen peroxide, thermometers, and IV bags.
