The state of California has been affected by an unprecedented four-year-long drought which drastically reduced the supply of available water. Although, some areas of the state have received precipitation in the past months, others remain under a close drought watch. By saving and conserving water, we attenuate the impacts of water shortages due to extended periods of drought.

In Walnut Creek, outdoor water use by single-family homes is the greatest opportunity for water reductions. While the City does not offer a rebate program, both water utilities serving residents (EBMUD and CCWD) have rebates available to convert lawns to more drought tolerant plants. Reducing your water use or using water more efficiently can help reduce the energy used to deliver, treat, heat, and process water.

In addition to local water utility rebates, the State Department of Water Resources is now offering an additional rebate of up to $2000 ($2/sq. ft.) for single-family residential lawns that are converted to drought tolerant landscaping and may be combined with your utility rebate

There are two water purveyors within the City of Walnut Creek’s jurisdiction – East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and Contra Costa Water District (CCWD), which provide domestic water supplies.  Do you know which water purveyor provides service for your property? In Walnut Creek, our water supply is limited, yet our community is growing and the demand for water is expected to increase. Water conservation is a sustainable strategy that allows for population and economic growth while helping our long-term water supply reliability. Although conservation has increasingly become a way of life for many, this is one of those periods when we have to take urgent action to further reduce water use. The City of Walnut Creek is committed to protecting our natural resources and encourages sustainable practices.
