Walnut Creek Recreation's Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to residents and non-residents of all ages interested in participating in high quality recreation programs. See below for information on eligibility and how to apply.

Eligibility:

Recreation scholarships are open to residents and non-residents of all ages. Household income must not exceed the following maximum income requirement based on the applicable household size (City of Walnut Creek Affordable Housing Criteria – 80% Area Median Income):

Application requirements:

  • Scholarship application form
  • Proof of Income: Submit tax return and other applicable items from this list. Please cross out all Social Security & tax ID numbers before submitting.
    • Copy of most recent Federal Income Tax Return (Form 10410/1040EZ/1040NR)
    • For those who do not file Federal Income Tax, copy of 2015 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) record
    • Proof of income assistance from issuing agency (County, State, School District, etc.)
    • Proof that the child is a foster or institutionalized child.

* Your household size must equal the number claimed on your income tax form.

Approval process, award amounts, and eligible programs:

A Recreation Division representative will notify you within 3 weeks whether your application is approved or denied based on the application and requirement criteria.

If approved, scholarship funds will be awarded with a maximum of $500 for a family and $250 for a single person household. Funds can be applied toward fees in eligible Walnut Creek Recreation programs and will cover a percentage of the fee. The percentage covered is determined by household income, with a minimum percentage of 50% of the fee covered by the scholarship.

Scholarship recipients must pay the remaining fee (co-payment) for enrollment. Co-payments may be made by check, cash, or credit card.

Eligible programs:

  • Recreation classes for all ages
  • Recreation summer camps
  • Aquatics private lessons, group lessons, and water exercise courses
  • Aquatics lap swim, rec swim, or water exercise passes
  • Specialized Recreation programs
  • Adult drop-in sports fees

Scholarship funds are not redeemable for facility rental fees, Center for Community Arts programs, Walnut Creek Senior Club drop-in programs, or Adult Sports League fees. Scholarship funds do not cover materials fees which are payable directly to the instructor at the start of the program.

Scholarships are awarded on a first-come/first-served basis and are dependent on the availability of program funds/resources. Scholarship recipients must re-apply every Fall quarter (usually in August) in order to be considered for future scholarships. Please check every year for new scholarship policy updates.
