Music Classes

Walnut Creek's Civic Arts Education provides a variety of music offerings for the beginner or the pre-professional student. From individual music lessons, to pre-professional opportunities and group jam sessions, CAE's Music Program has something for everyone. If you are just exploring an instrument or looking to hone your skills, our music program is the place for you.

Music Together

Winner of Bay Area Parent magazine’s “Best music class for young children” (2014) and CBS Local “Best mommy and me class in the East Bay” (2013). Working towards basic music skills of singing in tune and keeping an accurate beat, this class for newborn, toddler and preschoolers mixed together features songs, instrumental activities, movements and group music making. Family Music

A fun, mixed age music class that siblings can attend with a parent! Important musical concepts will be presented and reinforced in an engaging and nurturing environment. Experience the advantages of interacting, bonding and learning together. Siblings 11 months and under are free.

Petite Violinist

Begin learning rhythms, recognizing patterns, and developing an ear for violin in a fun and musically engaging environment. Posture, beginning bow holds, and songs “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb” are introduced. Violins will be discussed at first class.

Ukulele for Kids

Learn the basics of music on a fun instrument the perfect size for little hands! You will learn how to hold the instrument, basic notes and chords, strumming patterns and rhythms. We will play and sing our favorite songs while learning the basics of ukulele. Instruments will be discussed at first class. You will need to buy or rent your own.

Join us for a fun-filled class with parents. Learn violin fundamentals, posture, finger movements, bowing directions, rhythms and respective behavior through games and songs. Begin to play simple melodies in the manner of the Suzuki method. Instruments discussed at first class.

Twinkling Ivories (Beg)

Let your child join in the fun and enjoyment of learning the world of music. A beginning piano and music fundamentals class where, through singing, body movement and rhythm work, each child learns beginning piano fundamentals and elementary note reading. Drumming for Fun

This class is designed to inspire children to explore their musical curiosity, using a variety of hand drums. It emphasizes exposure to fun musical experiences and introduces basic rhythmic and beat patterns.

Guitar for Kids

Learn the basics of guitar, from holding it to playing basic chords. You will have the opportunity to play/sing along to all styles of music from nursery rhymes to popular music. Through some easy to learn music theory and rhythm exercise, you’ll be having fun rocking out in no time. Bring your own acoustic guitar to class.

Piano for Children (Continued)

Students will continue exploring the electronic keyboard by learning simple chords and song rhythms and how to improvise on the piano. Explore the many different sounds that the electronic piano can make and learn to identify the various instruments. Materials used will be current popular songs with fun and exciting rhythms, so be prepared to have fun in this class! Students should register only once for this class.

Recorder for Children

The recorder is an inexpensive end blown instrument—and it’s easy to play! Learn proper posture, how to read and play music, basic music theory, and music appreciation. By the end of the class, be able to play several songs. Students must provide their own recorder.

The Little Voice

Do you love to sing? Then come and sing your favorite songs with a fun supportive group. In this class you will sing songs from your favorite Disney movies while learning how to sing with proper technique.

Flute (Beg)

Are you starting band next year or just want to learn to play the flute? This class will start from the beginning. Learn how to make a sound, hold the flute correctly, read music, finger notes, and play basic songs like “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” You will get a great start while having fun learning as a group! Young Performers Orchestra

Sharpen your playing skills with intensive training in this orchestra. Foster friendships, teamwork and musical excellence. Participate in chamber music. No audition necessary. YPO students should remain in YPO throughout the summer.

Flute Ensemble

For flute players with one or more years’ experience on the flute. Should know how to read music and play scales in one octave up to two flats and two sharps. Play classical, jazz and popular repertoire in fun supportive environment. Improve tone, posture, technique and musicality over the summer. Last class is an informal concert.

Guitar for Tweens (Beg)

Learn some of the basics and discover how fun and easy the guitar can be! Proper technique, tone production, tuning, note reading and single line melodic playing. Move on to ensemble playing and basic solo repertoire. No experience in music or guitar necessary. Note: Nylon string classical guitar in appropriate size is required.

Introduction to Ukulele

If you’ve never played the ukulele before and are interested in learning to strum basic chords to traditional folk songs, this class is for you. Focus is on building an introduction to the instrument, using easy beginning chords, playing the Hawaiian vamp and having fun. Students must bring their own ukulele to class.

Electric Guitar Rock

Learn everything you need to know to rock out on guitar! Jam out to live rock music while learning some of rock’s most classics songs such as Black Sabbath’s “Ironman,” Neil Young’s “Rocking in the Free World” and Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower.” Learn everything from how to hold the guitar to rock’s most valuable tool, the power chord. You will be rocking out in no time! Bring your own electric guitar and small practice amp.

The Voice

Cello Ensemble

The glorious sound of a cello choir and the resonance and mellow tones of cellists playing together is inspiring and a huge audience hit. Work on ensemble playing, intonation and exploring the vast cello ensemble literature. At least one year private cello instruction or completion of Suzuki Book I is required.

Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra

Guitar in a Flash for Adults

Learn to play a perennial instrument, including effective playing postures, finger style and pick style techniques, reading tablature and standard music notation while playing beautiful melodies. Acoustic nylon or steel string guitars preferred but electric guitars are acceptable if accompanied with a small practice amplifier. Open to teens and adults. No experience necessary.
