Music Classes

Walnut Creek's Civic Arts Education provides a variety of music offerings for the beginner or the pre-professional student. From individual music lessons, to pre-professional opportunities and group jam sessions, CAE's Music Program has something for everyone. If you are just exploring an instrument or looking to hone your skills, our music program is the place for you.

Music Together

A musical buffet! At any level of your child’s music development, whether newborn, toddler or preschooler, everything he/she needs for Basic Music Competence is laid out both in class and in materials used at home for them to sample, learn from and enjoy. Classes are mixed age--bring siblings together! (Siblings under 8 months by class start date attend free!). Winner of Bay Area Parent Magazine’s ‘Best Children’s Music Program’. Now in its 25th year. Music Together Big Kids

Focusing on pre music-reading literacy, this research based program maintains a playful nature while teaching Sol fege, conducting, leadership skills, rhythm, awareness of pitch, graphic notation , story songs, dance and free movement with a variety of percussion instruments. Join us for a fun-filled class with parents. Learn violin fundamentals, posture, finger movements, bowing directions, rhythms and respective behavior through games and songs. Begin to play simple melodies in the manner of the Suzuki method. Instruments discussed at first class.

Music for Homeschoolers

In this fun and engaging class we develop a strong musical foundation by learning the concepts, language, notation, and vocabulary of music and its greatest composers. Through singing and playing rhythm and Orff instruments, children will develop the coordination, concentration, and self-confidence necessary for future musical growth. Orff instruments include assorted glockenspiels, xylophones, and metallophones designed just for children.

Piano for Children (Continued)

Students will continue exploring the electronic keyboard by learning simple chords and song rhythms and how to improvise on the piano. Explore the many different sounds that the electronic piano can make and learn to identify the various instruments. Materials used will be current popular songs with fun and exciting rhythms, so be prepared to have fun in this class! Students should register only once for this class.

Classical Guitar for Tweens (Beg)

Learn some of the basics and discover how fun and easy the guitar can be! Proper technique, tone production, tuning, note reading and single line melodic playing. Move on to ensemble playing and basic solo repertoire. No experience in music or guitar necessary. Note: nylon string classical guitar in appropriate size is required.

Cello Ensemble

The glorious sound of a cello choir and the resonance and mellow tones of cellists playing together is inspiring and a huge audience hit. Work on ensemble playing, intonation and exploring the vast cello ensemble literature. At least one year private cello instruction or completion of Suzuki Book I is required.

Intro to Fiddle

Violin, Viola, and Cello students with two years of experience will draw on a range of fiddle styles, from Scottish, Irish, and Quebecois to American old-time and Scandinavian. Folk music is transmitted orally, and there will a special emphasis on learning music by ear. Students are encouraged to bring a recording device.

Introduction to Ukulele

If you’ve never played the ukulele before and are interested in learning to strum basic chords to traditional folk songs, this class is for you. Focus is on building an introduction to the instrument, using easy beginning chords, playing the Hawaiian vamp and having fun. Students must bring their own ukulele to class.

NEW | Music Theory 101

Enjoy studying beginning chamber music through the Suzuki repertoire. Develop musical skills by listening and chamber ensemble playing with duos, trios, quartets. Classes will include skills to develop a strong rhythmic pulse, musical phrasing, and dynamics contrasting. Requirements: beginner to intermediate level student must be past Twinkle variations, Suzuki books I and II.

The Voice

NEW | Introduction to Steel Drums

This engaging and fun introduction to steel drum performance is for novices and experienced musicians alike. Steel drums (pans) originated in Trinidad and Tobago. Pans can perform any style of music, but with an unmistakably unique sound. Dive right into a fun, popular song and learn a corresponding scale to improvise. Steel drumming is an excellent way to add pizzazz to your life! Steel drums provided for in-class use.

Guitar in a Flash for Adults

Learn to play a perennial instrument, including effective playing postures, finger style and pick style techniques, reading tablature and standard music notation while playing beautiful melodies. Acoustic nylon or steel string guitars preferred but electric guitars are acceptable if accompanied with a small practice amplifier. Open to teens and adults. No experience necessary.

Native American Flute (Beg)

The Native American flute is one of the oldest instruments with a beautiful tone. It is an end blown instrument (very easy to produce a tone) that is based on a pentatonic scale--every note combination sounds good together. In this class we will explore all aspects of the Native American flute including how to improvise and play traditional Native American songs. Flutes will be provided by instructor for in-class use. Flutes may also be purchased directly from instructor for at home use.

A continuing course for students who have taken the Native American Flute (Beginning) class or students who have one year experience playing Native American Flute. Youth Orchestras of the Diablo Valley

Members of the Young Performers Orchestra (YPO) will sharpen orchestral playing skills while enjoying camaraderie, teamwork and ensemble experience and working toward musical excellence. A suite of successively more advanced orchestral experiences culminates with the teen level Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra which will perform challenging music and accompany renowned guest artists. Join the Flock and soar with the East Bay’s only flute choir. Enhance your performing opportunities and become a better flutist.
