Walnut Creek's Civic Arts Education provides a variety of music offerings for the beginner or the pre-professional student. From individual music lessons, to pre-professional opportunities and group jam sessions, CAE's Music Program has something for everyone. If you are just exploring an instrument or looking to hone your skills, our music program is the place for you.

Youth Orchestras of the Diablo Valley

Members of the Young Performers Orchestra (YPO) will sharpen orchestral playing skills while enjoying camaraderie, teamwork and ensemble experience working toward musical excellence. A suite of successively more advanced orchestral experiences culminates with the teen level Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra (DRYO) who will perform challenging music and accompany renowned guest artists. A musical buffet! At any level of your child’s music development, whether newborn, toddler or preschooler, everything he/she needs for basic music competence is laid out both in class and in the materials used at home, for them to sample, learn from and enjoy. Kids Make Music-Parent/Child

Child and parent sing, dance and play instruments. Solo singing is encouraged to develop listening, pitch-matching, and language skills. Concepts such as high and low, soft and loud, up and down are taught in a game-like atmosphere. More benefits include improved coordination and a sense of timing. Young children express their feelings productively, develop imagination and ability to focus as well as increase their self-confidence.

Learn to Play-Play to Learn

Parents and children affected by autism or related symptoms participate in this fun-inspired class and collaborate creatively using arts and music games. These games are great tools for home and school to interact more easily with others, create lasting friendships, navigate transitions, and cope with upset based on the premise that no child needs to be different than they already are--they just need tools to deal with today’s world. Facilitated by a music therapist. Some health insurances may cover.

Piano for Children (Continued)

Students will continue exploring the electronic keyboard by learning simple chords and song rhythms and how to improvise on the piano. Explore the many different sounds that the electronic piano can make and learn to identify the various instruments. Suzuki Group Ensemble

Suzuki Chamber music for string violin, viola and cello students. Enjoy studying beginning chamber music through the Suzuki Repertoire. Develop musical skills by listening and chamber ensemble playing with duos, trios and quartets. Classes will include skills to develop a strong rhythmic pulse, musical phrasing, and dynamics contrasting. Requirements: Beginner to intermediate level student must be past Twinkle variations, Suzuki Books I and II.

Learn some of the basics and discover how fun and easy the guitar can be! Proper technique, tone production, tuning, note reading and single line melodic playing. Guitar in a Flash for Adults

Learn to play a perennial instrument, including effective playing postures, finger style and pick style techniques, reading tablature and standard music notation while playing beautiful melodies. Acoustic nylon or steel string guitars preferred but electric guitars are acceptable if accompanied with a small practice amplifier. Open to teens and adults. No experience necessary.

Native American Flute for Adults

The Native American flute is one of the oldest instruments with a beautiful tone. It is an end blown instrument (very easy to produce a tone) that is based on a pentatonic scale--every note combination sounds good together. In this class we will explore all aspects of the Native American flute including how to improvise and play traditional Native American songs. Flutes will be provided by instructor for in-class use. Flutes may also be purchased directly from instructor for at home use.

Listening to Music: Baroque Period

What was it with Bach and Handel? Born one month and 80 miles apart, they never met. In old age both lost their vision and were operated on by the same quack doctor. Bach had 20 children by two wives. Handel never married. What did they learn from Vivaldi? What did Bach do that astonished Frederick the Great? How could Handel write Messiah in 24 days? Why did Handel say Gluck ‘knew no more counterpoint than my cook’? Learn about all this and more in our class.
