Music Classes

Walnut Creek's Civic Arts Education provides a variety of music offerings for the beginner or the pre-professional student. From individual music lessons, to pre-professional opportunities and group jam sessions, CAE's Music Program has something for everyone. If you are just exploring an instrument or looking to hone your skills, our music program is the place for you.

Music Together

Winner of Bay Area Parent magazine “Best music class for young children” (2014) and CBS Local “Best mommy and me class in the East Bay” (2013). Working towards basic music skills of singing in tune and keeping an accurate beat, this class for newborn, toddler and preschoolers mixed together features songs, instrumental activities, movements and group music making. Tuneful Toddlers-Parent/Child

Toddlers and parents learn delightful songs, dances and musical activities that focus on singing and keeping a beat to enhance timing, coordination, listening and language skills. High-quality percussion instruments are used, as well as puppets, stories and colorful props, to make this a very special music time.

Ukulele for Kids

Learn the basics of music on a fun instrument the perfect size for little hands! You will learn how to hold the instrument, basic notes and chords, strumming patterns and rhythms. Focusing on pre music-reading literacy, this research based program maintains a playful nature while teaching sol fege, conducting, leadership skills, rhythm, awareness of pitch, graphic notation, story songs, dance and free movement with a variety of percussion instruments. Drumming for Fun

This class is designed to inspire children to explore their musical curiosity, using a variety of hand drums. It emphasizes exposure to fun musical experiences and introduces basic rhythmic and beat patterns.

Learn the basics of guitar, from holding it to playing basic chords. You will have the opportunity to play/sing along to all styles of music from nursery rhymes to popular music. Let It Go! Singing for Homeschoolers

This is a music appreciation class emphasizing vocal development and learning vocal technique, vocal range and breath control. Students will be exposed to different composers, various genres and styles of music. Have confidence when singing. Most important, have fun singing as a group!

NEW | Intro to Piano and Recorder for Homeschoolers

Learn the basics of piano and recorder in one class! Recorder is a great first wind instrument, easy to produce a tone right away. Students will learn to read music and rhythms while having fun playing songs we know and love. We will alternate between piano and recorder in class and at times play them both in a group ensemble. Classical Guitar for Tweens (Beg)

Learn some of the basics and discover how fun and easy the guitar can be! Proper technique, tone production, tuning, note reading and single line melodic playing. Move on to ensemble playing and basic solo repertoire. No experience in music or guitar necessary. Note: Nylon string classical guitar in appropriate size is required.

Youth Orchestras of the Diablo Valley

Members of the Young Performers Orchestra (YPO) will sharpen orchestral playing skills while enjoying camaraderie, teamwork and ensemble experience and working toward musical excellence. A suite of successively more advanced orchestral experiences culminates with the teen level Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra (DRYO) which will perform challenging music and accompany renowned guest artists. Cello Ensemble

The glorious sound of a cello choir and the resonance and mellow tones of cellists playing together is inspiring and a huge audience hit. Introduction to Ukulele

If you’ve never played the ukulele before and are interested in learning to strum basic chords to traditional folk songs, this class is for you. Focus is on building an introduction to the instrument, using easy beginning chords, playing the Hawaiian vamp and having fun. Students must bring their own ukulele to class.

Electric Guitar Rock

Learn everything you need to know to rock out on guitar! Jam out to live rock music while learning some of rock’s most classics songs such as Black Sabbath’s “Ironman,” Neil Young’s “Rocking in the Free World” and Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower.” Learn everything from how to hold the guitar to rock’s most valuable tool, the power chord. You will be rocking out in no time! Bring your own electric guitar and small practice amp.

Join the Flock and soar with the East Bay’s only flute choir. Enhance your performing opportunities and become a better flutist. Folk Jam

Feel the thrill of being part of a full jazz ensemble. Play music of the jazz masters from the ’30s to the present day. Listening to Music: Modern Period

The next class in the Listening to Music series will focus on the modern period. We will listen to and discuss music by Barber, Bartók, Berg, Bernstein, Britten, Copland, Falla, Gershwin, Hindemith, Holst, Ives, Messiaen, Prokofiev, Respighi, Schoenberg, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Vaughan Williams, Webern and others. Native American Flute Circle

A mixed level ensemble, all levels welcome. We will play a new song every week that explores the wonderful and beautiful tone of the Native American flute. Beginning students will learn the pentatonic scale and basic flute techniques while advanced students will learn how to embellish and phrase while playing with others. Instruments provided for in-class use, and instruments may be purchased from instructor for at-home use.
