Sketchbook Journal Workshop
Have you always thought it would be fun to maintain a sketchbook journal? Whether traveling around the globe or making observations in your own backyard, journaling is a wonderful way to combine the joys of drawing with your experiences in life. If you think that you can’t draw, find out through journaling that you can! There are many ways to make your sketchbook journal a personal and creative experience. Learn the methods and materials for ‘quick’ sketches, long sketches, what to focus on, how to add color and how to keep it all compact and travel ready. First meeting in Annex A, remainder on location. Bring a small sketchbook, an HB or #2 pencil, a fine-tipped permanent black pen and 2 markers-a medium gray and a light gray.

Pushing the Brush: Abstraction & Gesture in the Act of Painting
Take the mystery out of abstraction. Not all abstraction is non-objective but all painting involves some abstraction from the natural world. Learn time-tested ways to enliven your work by employing techniques such as distortion, exaggeration, simplification, expressive color, gestural brush work and more. Practice capturing the essence of an image and putting it down quickly in loose expressive brushwork. Slide lecture and short demos provide the foundation. Instructor-led exercises and individual attention promote the momentum to transform your work to a new level.

Synthesis of the Masters
Designed for artists who are serious about studying Master Painters, past and present, in order to better inform one’s own personal vision. This will not be a class in merely copying the Masters. Rather, it will be a foray into the study of the abstract structural design inherent in all great works of art. Rigorous drawing exercises from the Masters will be employed as a means to ‘read’ complex compositions, as if one were a ‘visual detective’ searching for clues of hidden rhythmic patterns and structure. The outcome will be many rich studies as a byproduct of the workshop. More importantly, each artist will leave with a deeper understanding of how to ‘see’ and translate visually the world before them through the lens of the Masters. Materials: List available upon registration.

We’ll focus on various techniques that apply to all manners of imagery. Ongoing demonstrations, informal lectures and constant feedback. Expect to do lots of short studies on first morning and expand them into layered studies in the afternoon. The next day will build upon the first, with additional demonstrations with both sessions devoted to the development of one painting with a personal choice of imagery, selection of colors and methods of application. Materials: List available on line.
