One City, One Book: 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society'
The latest offering in the popular One City, One Book: Walnut Creek Reads program is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The story, which unfolds in a series of letters, is the enchanting tale of an English author living in the shadow of World War II and what she learns from the Guernsey Islanders about the power of friendship, books, love, and the human spirit. Book lovers and occasional readers are invited to join the community read this summer and participate in a variety of citywide One City, One Book events in September and October.
Event highlights include:
· "Meet the Author — An Evening with Annie Barrows," at the Shadelands Arts Center on Sept. 24

"Remembering Times of War," a panel discussion on the civilian experience at the Civic Park Community Center on Thursday, Oct. 8
·
"Letters from the Guernsey Literary Society," a dramatic reading under the direction of Michael Butler at the Lesher Center for the Arts on Oct. 12

Book discussions in Rossmoor, downtown Walnut Creek, and at the Ygnacio Valley Library

Live video feed of Planning Commission meetings now online
Walnut Creek residents can now watch Planning Commission meetings broadcast via a live video feed on the City’s internet site (along with City Council meetings) at www.walnut-creek.org (Quick Links). All Planning Commission meetings are now videotaped and archived in video format instead of audio. Currently, all of the City’s commission meetings are audio-streamed and available to listen to on the City’s website.  Note: Commission meetings are not televised on the local Comcast, Astound, or AT&T cable channels.

Walnut Creek Farmers' Market
The Walnut Creek Farmers' Market can now be found in its new permanent location on the north end of Locust Street between Giammona Way and Lacassie Avenue every Sunday morning. The Walnut Creek Farmers' Market has teamed up with its new partner and neighbor, John Muir Health. JMH will begin by supporting the market on opening day with a cooking demo featuring Executive Chef Allison Negrin from John Muir Hospital. A face painter and a balloon twister will also be on hand to entertain the kids while you shop. The Farmers' Market is open every Sunday, year round, rain or shine. Recycle your old batteries in Walnut Creek
Local retailers are now providing battery recycling for single-use household batteries. Those merchants in Walnut Creek who now accept batteries are: Long's Drugs stores at 1123 S. California Blvd., 1914 Tice Valley Blvd., and 738 Bancroft Rd., and Rite Aid Drugs at 1526 Palos Verde Mall. Bedford Gallery offers public art walking tours
Bedford Gallery is now offering guided walking tours of Walnut Creek’s outstanding public art works in the vicinity of City Hall. Tours start at 11 a.m. The 45-minute, docent-led tour departs from the front of the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Dr. The tour will include seven to 10 pieces located between Lesher Center and City Hall. Admission is $5 and includes a free pass to the Bedford Gallery, which is located in the Lesher Center. Tour schedules are subject to change; for more information, call 925-295-1417.

Take a Free Ride on the downtown trolleys
Festive cable car-styled trolleys are a staple of the downtown Free Ride service on Route 104. The regular weekday service runs every 15 minutes between around 7:10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. On Saturday the bus runs every 20 minutes between 8:45 a.m. and 6:40 p.m. On Sunday, the service runs every 20 minutes between 9:10 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. For more information on Route 104 times of operation and stops, as well as a map, click here.

Sign up for emergency training
When disaster strikes, you may be on your own. In the event of a major catastrophe, such as an earthquake, experts say that residents are likely to be on their own for the first several days. You can be prepared to take care of yourself, your family, and your neighbors through Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. Through CERT, you will learn how to shut off utilities, extinguish small fires, perform light search and rescue, carry out first aid, and much, much more. These free classes are usually held once a week for six weeks, for a total 20 hours of training, and are coordinated by the Contra Costa Fire District in partnership with the City of Walnut Creek. Let City know about returning military personnel
The City Council wants to honor all Walnut Creek military personnel who have served a tour of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan or other area of conflict around the world. The Council will present an official commendation to those residents who served their country as a member of the U.S. armed services. If you know a returning veteran who should be recognized, please send an e-mail to manager@walnut-creek.org or call 925-943-5812, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please include the person’s name, address, phone number, branch of service, and date he or she returned to the area.

Meals on Wheels seeking volunteers
Because of increasing demand for the Meals on Wheels program in Walnut Creek, program organizers are seeking volunteer drivers who can deliver hot, nutritious meals to frail, homebound seniors during noontime, Monday-Friday. The program seeks interested persons who have free time (about 90 minutes a week) during the noon hour. To volunteer, call 925-937-8607.

Sister Cities group seeks new members

The Walnut Creek Historical Society invites you to docent at the Shadelands Ranch Historical Museum. The Museum is open 1-4 Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. Training is provided and a monthly docent meeting is required. Call 925-935-7871.
