  Pay Station FAQs

Why is the City of Walnut Creek installing new parking pay stations?

The City maintains approximately 1,640 single space parking meters for on street and municipal lot parking. Each space must be visited frequently for cash collections, equipment repairs, and battery replacement. The multi-space pay station technology eases all of these operational challenges, improves reliability, and offers multiple language and payment options for the user.

Where are the parking pay stations located?

Initially, six (6) multi-space pay stations will be installed along North Main Street between Civic Drive and Bonanza Street. This first group of pay stations will replace approximately 32 single space parking meters.

How will I find my parking pay station after I park?

Pay stations are located near the middle of each block. Look for the directional signage on each lamppost, as well as the Pay Here” logos on the side of each pay station unit.

How do the pay stations benefit the public?

We believe the multi-space pay station technology will improve customer convenience by offering multiple ways to pay, enhanced security and reliability, and multi-lingual capabilities.

How do the new pay stations work?

The new pay station technology operates on a Pay-per-Space system. Using the Pay-per-Space system, users enter their parking space number (A100-A133) located on the sidewalk curb. The user then has an option of using coins or credit cards to pay for a maximum of 2 hours of parking. Once the transaction is accepted and a receipt is issued, the user is finished. Because this is a Pay-per-Space instead of a Pay-and-Display system, there is no need to return to your vehicle. Your receipt will clearly state your space number and the time your space will expire.

Each pay station provides user-friendly instructions. During the first week of the new technology, City employees will be available to assist the public with questions or pay station use. Parking Enforcement Officers are also available for assistance at anytime.

Do I need to place the receipt in my vehicle window?

No. With the Pay-per-Space system, you pay for a specific space number, which alleviates the need to return to your car.

If I pay for one hour of parking, but decide to stay for a second hour, can I add time for my parking space?

Yes. The pay station will allow you to pay for additional time if you n eed it. However, please note, when you add time before your time has expired, your remaining time will reset. For example, if you pay for an additional hour with five minutes remaining on the meter, the five minutes will reset and you will then have one hour of paid parking. Always refer to your most recent receipt to confirm when you time expires.

I have a handicapped placard. Can I park at any of the pay-for-space parking spaces and not pay?

Yes.

After my time expires, can I buy another ticket and stay longer in the same space or move-up to the next space?

No. Current rules and regulations will continue to apply. After you have parked in any space for the maximum time posted, you must move off that space.

Who can I call if I need help or have questions?

The City’s Traffic Operation Team will be more than happy to assist you. They can be reached at (925) 943-5800 ext 133 between 8:00AM and 3:00PM, Monday-Friday.
